"good day, butterfly! i thought you didn't have lungs!"
"i don't, but i am dreaming."
"then i must also be dreaming."
"no! look at your watch!" (it's almost four o'clock)
"tricky!"
"yes, it is a great dream."
"but why are you white and not colorful? in my dream, i would be colorful. and, if i could fly, i would fly across the country to the west coast and smell all the flowers along the way and be eternally happy."
"i can't see my own wings as an insect. doesn't matter, anyway; i will die tomorrow."
"oh no, butterfly!"
"if the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, chrissy, rest assured the water bill is higher there also."

On the morning of Thursday, August 30th a young man from Colorado
chose to end his life in the rafters of a public tent at the Comfort &
Joy Burning Man theme camp.

Though he was unknown to us, in the wake of his passing we're learning
from those who knew him that he was creative, kind, unconventional and
smart, and that he was regarded with affection by many.

His final act, committed in solitude, has one lasting effect as it
brings us together to mark his passing. To all who have offered our
camp their sympathy and support during this time, thank you. To all
who knew him, please accept our sincere condolences.

It is estimated that there was an one hour interval between the last
visit to the tent by a camp member, and the discovery of the body by a
second camp member. It is believed that the tent was unoccupied
during this time, and that there were no witnesses to the suicide.

One other individual, not associated in any way with the camp, was in
the tent at the time the body was discovered. Emergency personnel
were immediately contacted by camp members. Authorities responded
within minutes and closed the scene upon arrival.

The Black Rock City Rangers, Sheriffs and other law enforcement
officials who assisted us with this incident were very professional,
supportive, and helpful to us at a difficult time. We are grateful
for their services. We are also thankful for the warm and organized
support we have received from the grief counselors from the Black Rock
City Mental Health Team. They helped us openly discuss what had
happened and come to a shared understanding of the morning's events.

Much of our camp was quarantined while the coroners did their jobs and
we canceled that day's events (a yoga class, a queer discussion group,
glitter body painting and a watercolor painting workshop).

As a camp, we decided to make a contribution to David Best's Temple of
Forgiveness, where people can mourn, remember, write messages and
leave items to be ceremonially burned on Sunday night. We felt the
rope the young man used represented the terrible violence he committed
upon himself and the people around him. By sending the rope up in
flames, we hoped to allow some of that pain to disperse. None of us
believe that this young man wanted to trouble us with his actions.

The members of Comfort & Joy extend their deepest sympathy to all who
knew this young man. Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and
special people in his life. Although we will never know or understand
him the way you did, he indeed touched us as well, made us grow, and
hopefully become better individuals. May the rest of his journey be
peaceful and lead him to the joy we all seek in our lives.

We look forward to continuing our mission of creating positive, warm
and supportive queer community both in Black Rock City and the Bay
Area.

With love and respect,

The Comfort & Joy Family

burning man - adam, are you going?

Aug. 18th, 2007 | 04:10 pm

adam, i am not going to burning man. but i get the emails. i can't find your address so i will forward this most interesting bit to you this way:

"I would suggest Pyramid Lake to anyone wanting a soak after BM, the water is clear and beautiul, you can camp on the shore, next to the Mother/child rock and swim a few yards to the Pyramid where ther are hot springs bubbling into the clear, cool waters of the lake. I would not tell everyone of this as every year more burners find it But GC is my camp now so I will share. The turn off is just a few miles toward Reno form the burn, it is a fourwheel road, not bad, I take my truck and trailer. It is so close to BRC that it is amazing to me that no one knows it. Just and buy your Pyramid pass on the inernet from the tribe and soak and swim and rinse the playa away! Don't tell! Just look at a map , look for the pyramid the lake is named after, right there where it is close to the shore is a road from the highway leading right to the waters edge, beach , hot springs. i take my canoe and decompress, just a few miles from the bumper to bumper traffic leaving BM.

Life is full of surprises, just open your eyes"

http://www.visitortips.com/images/gallery/destinations/usa/nevada/reno/fullsize/reno33.jpg

there are other places that are hot springs but i think they are all illegal during burning man. not that the legality/illegality of any such thing applies to you. i like to ruin chefdaddy's secrets??

here are also some other related reply-alls that i've compiled:

It may be a sacred site, but the PIAUTES are selling permits to the PYRAMID at many drug stores, etc. The term, "sacred" is used for political reasons by native Americans in dealing with the U.S. government. Sacred means something like "private homeland" and it may be considered foreign territory to the U.S.

As a result of "manifest destiny", as far as I'm concerned Native Americans can do whatever they want in the name of "sacred"....it's one minute issue compared to what the U.S. Government did and continues to do to exacerbate living conditions on reservations...or are you one of the many that assume/believe that all Native American tribes own casinos??? I've known many a NA that has been denied educational scholarships because he/she doesn't "need the money because their tribe gives them monetary support" (NOT!)...and even if the tribe does give financial support, what a racist remark!

There is a specific "sacred" spot of the Pyramid area that is fenced off with many no trespassing signs that is often desecrated...AND, perhaps the Piautes just got sick and tired of white folks trespassing on the Pyramid that they decided to make it a for fee visit...more power to them...

Cave Rock here in Tahoe is a Washoe sacred site that was taken from them by our government.

All that I am asking, is that anyone who uses sacred sites, have some respect...whether or not there is a few...the same goes for our planet in general...practice remembering with steps walked on her space...every now and then think about what you (everyone) are doing....

Manifest Destiny was an excuse to invade the American continent, slaughter natives, and create concentration camps called "reservations." Then they moved on to Hawaii, Samoa, the Philippines, Cuba, Central America, Korea, and Vietnam. The Christians still believe they must "free" the "savages", now known as "terrorists" and "gunmen". The "Trail of Tears" and Guantanamo are examples of the imposition of democracy. The "savages" and "insurgents" are people who are simply trying to hold on to their homeland seized by colonial corporations in the name of democracy. It's more about capitalization and development. But Asians, Muslims, communists, and primitives (first people) are struggling to preserve their own way of life that's thousands of years of tradition without disturbing the environment.

So, yes, native Americans should be able to do whatever the like and call it whatever they want. "Sacred" is an English word so the ignorant Christians don't have to learn about another culture. (!!!!) Yes, the U.S. Government goes back and forth regarding it's treaties and treatment of Native Americans. I am part Cherokee but I don't know anything about my family's native American history. I've also been part of other Utopias and subcultures. It's increasingly difficult to live freely in America. It's the effect of crowding. One excuse for killing Native Americans was because they were not wearing clothes. Men are naturally nudists in warm climates which you can see in places where the Missionaries haven't corrupted the natives. Something as simple and nonviolent as being nude and natural is still a crime in civilization so Native Americans in warm climates cannot practice their traditions. The "IN GOD WE TRUST" culture is extremely rigid because "God" is masterfully punitive.

Casinos have been a way for Native Americans to counter-exploit Christian Colonialists without another violent confrontation. It's impossible now for Native Americans to practice their native lifestyles and economy. They have been pushed into too small of a space for primitive survival. Is their first language Piaute or English?

Some folks think it is better if all humans are the same. Others believe it's better to preserve our differences. I live on Chumash land. Near me were hot springs and cold springs close the the beach. Very few people know that there are springs under the buildings now. There is no native Chumash culture. Those very few that remain have been brain washed, to use an American term, by Missionaries in a concentration camp or reservation. You would have to go back ten generations to find the native Chumash culture before they were put in chains and pillories. Am I a bad person for living on Chumash land? Is it really about good and bad people? Or is it about more and more people? How do you preserve a sacred acre when a thousand people want a hotel on it and the sacred people have no means of native support other than permit, rent, or sell?

Education is valuable. Unfortunately, the current U.S. Government prefers to "train" people rather than educate them. As a society, the U.S. is increasingly aristocratic and trying to get rid of the social influences of Roosevelt and Kennedy. Kennedy tried to compensate Native Americans.

Trish is asking for respect. That's something that no one should have to ask for because respect is the first word to define love. That is the first thing that we must all give each other. If I were to go to Pyramid, it would be to learn about the Paiutes. That's education. We might exchange memories. That's becoming understanding. We might feel love for each other. That's the joy of life.

In short, go.

The pitter-patter on the half-roof has just about stopped now. There is hardly a line at the window, and the employees of the sub shop are shooting the shit behind the glass. One is a heavyset Italian woman about forty and looks like she’s smoked cigarettes for most of them, and the other is some halfwit red-head kid chewing on a straw, fresh out of high school, or freshly dropped out, whatever. There are very few levels on which these two can speak and identify with one another. Work is one of them.

“Is Jeremy coming in tonight?” asks Halfwit. His hair looks as though it would blow in the wind, but it never moves.

“Nah, he called out. Again,” says Heavyset while she ties her turquoise button-up sweater around her greatest, flabbiest circumference.

“Jesus, is he sick? There’s been that stomach bug. I was out for a while with it, and Alice had it, too.”

“Yeah well… don’t quote me on this, but I heard they think he might actually have AIDS. You know Jeremy; he won’t goddamn get tested. They can’t force him, you know.”

“Fucking Christ. I HAD noticed he’d lost some weight.”

“More than some. Says he’s had these shaking chills, too. I almost called his doctor, but they won’t tell me shit. Confidentiality and all. But apparently bigwig Richie talked to his mother.”

“Nice. Richie doesn’t talk to just anyone, either.”

“Exactly. I don’t know, just a rumor. So don’t go sending him cards and balloons.”

“Yuh, what would they say? ‘Sorry you have AIDS?’ ‘Heard you had the Hiv?’ Do they sell those? CAN they sell those?“

“Don’t be a smartass, Billy, he might actually have it.”

mood: happyhappy, simply put
music: thom yorke - cymbal rush

not much time to write anything other than story, but:

woke up hung over, chocolate chip pancakes down the street (way the hell down, but the ride is nice when he's driving), back to sleep til three or so, bought a couch (don't forget to keep in touch with ben), he gets out of class early because the headache is back, up late swordfighting, then a second security breach (this time insurance covers!), giggling up til almost 4. did i forget anything? it's bad for the sleep cycle, but this is what happens when nothing happens.

considering the atom bomb i didn't mention.
